When I bought this winder I thought for kite flying. The piece of string is twisted not at all like cotton kite string.
It Measures almost 10" to tip of handle, stands 4.75" Base is 4.75" by 4.5"
It is pegged construction. Would the string be fly fishing string, I did see some listings for fly fishing string winders?

    Could be a yarn winder.

Thanks Holly ! Would you use string to hold the beginning piece of yarn in place ?

I think your first instinct is correct.
    String for kite.
    Maybe homemade.

That's even more likely; it's kind of big for kite string.

Thanks to all of you ! It is too small to hold clothes line. Yes I remember life before clothes dryers.

I see no reason to assume that bit of string there now ever had anything to do with the functioning of the piece; could have once held a tag at some other sale/auction.

I see no way to hold this with one hand while turning the crank with the other without interfering with the winding operation. It was made to sit on its own legs when in use, & can't see that as working well for kite string or clothes line.

Yes it is hand made. It is aged maybe has been out in the weather.
Bronwell's comment: " It was made to sit on its own legs when in use,". The turning handle is 1.25" from the legs so that it can sit on a table's edge and have room to turn.
