Recent thrift purchase. What can you tell me? Would this be vintage from Mexico? Maybe 1970s or so? Need some keywords so I can check similar.

Colors came out a lighter brighter in the photos for some reason. Measures approx 36"x23".

    Thanks!

    Thank you, Blooey!

Would I be correct to call the figures Aztec inspired?

It's Peruvian, with imagery derived from precolumbian textiles (eg. Chimu, Paracas). The little floating faces represented trophy heads, collected by many Andean cultures.

Right, not related at all to the Aztec (Mexico, 1300 to 1521 A.D.) It's from Peru; specifically, the Wari culture, (also known as Huari) which spread along the coastline and into the central highlands, from roughly 500 to 1100 A.D.

This is actually a copy of a famous Wari weaving in the textile collection of the Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology, and History, in Lima.

Outside of Peru, the number of historic Peruvian area cultures and empires is not often realized, (other than the Inca.) But Chavin, Cupisnique, Moche, Paracas, Nasca, Huari, and Chimu cultures actually existed before the Inca. Textiles were very important in all of these, and the arid conditions have enabled many examples to be preserved.

Thank you, 2manybooks! That's the one...I didn't have time to find it on line, but I've seen it, I just couldn't remember where. Came back to look, and you'd already found it!
