Definitely one to look for at rummage sales. Sometimes they price things high and sometimes the blow it. Estate sales too, because when they blow it they really blow it and something like this might get overlooked in a basement.

Seller blunders are possible. I've bought some.

This may be a buyer blunder, but I took a gamble and won the auction for $6. It is being shipped, so the actual cost is $150. It's due on Saturday. It's a small Edison phonograph of unknown type/condition/completeness, with a nice external horn and about 70+ cylinder records of unknown condition.

    Here's the entire text ...
    Old Victrola,
Doesn't work, needs to be cleaned to display,

And here are the photos ...

The dark area in the bin is the top of a phonograph.

Buried treasure or what I would have paid locally? I'll soon see.

    It would be a keeper!
What you think is a fan, is a seashell.
I love that it's art, a lamp, and specifically for a phone.

Fingers crossed. The record cylinders might be the treasure, especially if there are any good rarities in there.

I have over exposed the auction image to show the phonograph lid with its handle.

I can see that there is a mix of 2 and 4 minute records.

The size of the horn is for a Fireside or Gem. Looking at the size of the lid it looks good for one of those, but it may also be a Standard using that smaller size horn.

To the left of the lid is a rectangular cardboard box. It could be something I've seen before.

All of these models began as 2 minute players and later were made to handle both 2 and 4 minutes. Back to that box. The owners of the older phonographs were offered an inexpensive conversion kit in a box like that. The kit also came with a several 4 minute records, I can identify a few of those record boxes in the lot.

It felt like a time capsule to me, and not the common assemblage.

It arrived today and this gamble was a good one!
    :cigar:

The phonograph is an Edison Gem that had been converted to play 2 and 4 minute records with reproducers for both. The cardboard box was indeed for the conversion parts. Also in the tub was the crane that suspends the horn.

Nearly all of the 2 minute records have severe mold damage and are trash. The 4 minute records are fine. All of the records are common ones.

This little gem is next on my work bench.
