These patches belonged to a family member who was a WWII veteran. My DH says the two on the top right and middle indicate Army Air Corps, and that the triangular one is showing a bomb.

Does anyone know what the bomb represented, and what the patch on the bottom left was for? Should the bomb patch have the point at the top or the bottom?

    Thanks for any info...

The pictures may make them look different than they actually are. By the pictures the Air Corp Command patches look like repops, as does the bomb one. The 3rd Air Corp group looks the most legit.

Terry, here's a closeup of one of the Air Corp Command patches (thanks for the terminogy) and pics of the backs.

They look more right that way, but clearly the two command ones are later production. They can be no later a couple years after the war.

T don't think I'd go all that near someone who was semi skilled in armaments, you'd never never know when the semi unskilled part would kick in.

They got glossier looking later - more synthetic fibers in the thread

LOL @ not going near a semi-skilled armamenteur (is that a word?)!

My camera may have made the patches look shinier than they are. I'll have to check tomorrow.

Here you can see a mix of the threads. They used the hemp or cotton where it didn't show and had more of the shiny stuff up front. 0711 hemp.jpg

Interesting. I don't know about mid-century embroidery, but do know that with machine embroidery today, the settings in the machine can determine how much of the surface thread gets pulled through to the back. Sometimes you see very little of it, and sometimes a lot more.

From what you're saying, I guess they used the better thread in the top part of the machine, and the hemp or cotton in the bobbin.

The 2 stars with wings are for the Army Air Corps. The one on the left with the 3 is for the 3rd Air Force. The triangle with the bomb is a specialist patch that went on the lower right sleeve. It is a bomb layer-they guys responsible for loading the bombs into the planes. It goes with the long end point pointed down.

Thanks for the photo! I have his two sargeant's stripes patches, too.

Would you sell them all in a single listing, or individually, or break them into two or three groups?

Since they are patches you can choose. There would not be a benefit to selling them together. If someone is going to buy the individual patches, they are probably going to put them on a uniform.
