Interesting carving Having a problem understanding the writing on the rear. Translate to mean ( Till he replenish the whole world ) Something to do with the Pope and an emblem. Heeeeelp The more I read the more confused I am. Approximately 8" X 20" Thanks
I believe if you can guess as to city you found it, you can google 1943 ymca yearbook roster and maybe find a list of members, if that helps. Very interesting piece! There was also a Navy Ymca, which I can’t read what inscription says, but maybe “Hull” and “deg”. Maybe if you can write what you think it says, someone could figure it out better.
I think it's along the lines of "until the Second Coming" - it was an overtly Christian evangelical movement to back when. This implies that their membership is supposedt to spread the message worldwide.
Could this be Canadian? The carver took great care to show all of Canada, plus it looks like "Hull" on the back and "Designe". Hull is an area of Quebec and designe could be a French Canadian spelling? Love it, wherever it's from. I went to YMCA camp. Great memories.
Given the date (and use of foreign language,) I would think came out of an internment camp of some sort. The YMCA was involved with camps for prisoners of war, refugees, and our own unconstitionally-detained Japanese-Americans. You've got the camp number on front; should be identifiable. http://www.mfldymca.org/about_us/history_national.php Debora
Yep. Made by a German prisoner of war at Hull (Camp 32) outside of Ottawa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_prisoner-of-war_camps_in_Canada Debora
Poignant use of emblem "Until it shall fill the entire universe" referring to the Y.M.C.A. from which emanate rays of light. Debora
I did not get any notices that there were replies to this post last night i came to Antiquers and was shock at all that had been uncoverd Thanks Everyone and a special Thanks, to Caribou's house for putting us on the right track and Debora U nailed it with that link. I found a link to a book called " The Red Patch " Political imprisonment in Hull, Quebec during World War II © Michael Martin Autumn,2007 Gatineau, Quebec http://www.socialisthistory.ca/Docs/History/RedPatch.pdf This book could have been used as the narrative for the Tv series " Hogan's Heroes " I can,t wait to get to the chapter with the names of the internees
AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION: I very much doubt that Allied POWs at German camps were provided with knives for recreational carving. Debora
Or the Japanese camps either. I read a portion of the book that some escaped prisoner returned back to the camp after an encounter with a grizzly bear. Some of the make-up of some of the camp included Candian citizens. The Geneva Convention rule was for the most parts respected by the Canadian Government. I agree with you, Hogan's Heroes is a comedy show that in no way reflex the atrocities inflicted on prisoners of war b by the Germans and the Japanese.
ya, but we put our own Japanese citizens in camps too..... War is Hell !!! ( so is dealing with Jeff Sessions..! )
It's the motto of Glasgow University and it was in a poem by George Withers. http://distichalatina.blogspot.com/2012/04/donec-totum-impleat-orbem.html
Well, interesting and a kinda misterious. 'Donec totum impleat orbem' a motto of Order of Crescent, firstly created in era of Mehmed II (Mahomet II) of ottoman king known as conqueror of Constantinople (Istanbul city), a secret society active in Europe for favor of Ottoman Empire. Narrative of some tales about Henri II and Diane Medici of France etc. Probably, it's turning point of WWII, Dec 1943. So people waiting for justice which bring peace at their point of view and their side in WWII. Map showing soley American contient and sending its arrows (or lightnings ) throug out a triangular eye. ( Donec totum impleat orbem : jusq'elle (la justice peut-etre) remplisse le monde-entier / till it remplishes the entire world* (*globe/planet)) All those i wrote just to give a different view to wise people here who are more cultivated , educated, skilled then me. Thanks.
