    Nice painting...

Can't make out that sig. and the description I was given was "outdoor scene, appears Flemish, three men running".

But I see "pastoral scene, three men return from harvest (is hay harvested?)"

    Flemish?

Visually, Wusikow is nearest to a human name I can figure when zooming out.

I tried using Signaturefinder... if reading literally, up close: Wiisivow, Wiigiyow - you get the idea. LOL

One harvests a crop. Hay is cut and baled. Love the painting! I'm a sucker for bucolica.

(I think that is only just now a word, but I quite like it!)

When I see these indecipherable signatures, I always think sofa art.

Somehow the frame and matting makes me think of sofa art. Does the back look old? is it on canvas or board?

    Hi guys, morning
Its small, 8x10 and on board so not for sofa...
My boss asked me to try to sort it out, and I doubt she'd pay me the big bucks (not) on something she didn't think was of some value.
    Thanks for trying, though.

The term "sofa art" to me is just a kinder way of saying "factory painting" and isn't about the size so much. I worked at a summer gift shop that had a second floor filled with factory art, so I tend to think of it a lot. Ours had those double frames with linen in between. That's a typical factory art framing style. The odd signature that doesn't match any known language is usually a giveaway.

You could be right but I can't prove it is or isn't sofa art bev... I didn't hold it in my hands.
My boss is a fine arts appraiser so she makes the final call.
Hopefully I'll get to see it IRL at some point.

That's what I thought, too, but googling doesn't bring up anything.

I threw every combo I could think of into signature finder, no luck...

If it is old (as she believes) we still have to come up with comps for appraisal.

Can't just throw out a wag likewe might if it was for sale.

Resulting in my reluctant query on that ghastly 70s art brut piece. :).

I don't get how your boss can be a fine arts appraiser and not have a good idea of what this is. Mid-20th C. riff on a French Barbizon harvest scene...a la Jules Veyrassat.

    A decorative accent piece.

Close up, the bale of hay looks like a lump of gefilte fish!

Alex -- it was almost dinner time when you wrote that, which I assume put you in a condition which affected your vision...

Actually there is such a word, but rarely used and then not quite as you intended. Normally the mot juste is "bucolics." However your bucolica is quite good and in some respects more encompassing than bucolics--normally limited to poetry.

You should monetize it. Trademark it and sell a line of bucolica products. Organic produce, camping gear, mosquito netting, sheep dip and much more!

Alec, I read your post before I had had any coffee. Good thing!!

I was laughing too hard to type! Since my idea of camping is a Motel 66, and mosquito netting is for decorating the bedroom, the idea of my marketing such as you suggest is only appealing monetarily. Even so...

However, you did remind me of something that is a treasured memory. When I was a child, my grandmother used to read me a little book called, "Two Little Navahos Dip Their Sheep." It was an exceptionally quiet tale...somehow the author got across the pre-dawn atmosphere and the silence under the stars over the desert...

    :)

You know I'm going to have to look up that book.
