Hi Folks - I've got what I think might be a yixing teapot. I've seen a couple of these one the board but never had one myself before. It's about 4 1/4" tall and 2 3/8" across the base. I've got the feeling it's a new tourist item but I thought I'd put it up to see if anyone knows more about it. Thanks much!
    Don

Don, didn't find identical markings for Yixing teapots, but did find several with the same bottom left quadrant mark. I would bet money yours is Yixing, but do way for others. I believe the marks pic needs to be rotating 90 degrees clock-wise.

Scroll 1/2 way down the page to the red clay circle mark for "Made by Ye Heng Jia." Notice it is sectioned. The bottom left section looks identical to yours. Others with the same bottom left section, but in squares are "Li Bao Zhen" and "Li Bi Fang." Several others have similar bottom left marks.

Including your pic, cropped and rotated.

Hi Susan - thank you so much! I see what you mean about the similarities. I didn't realize these can be traced to specific makers. And thanks for re-orienting the mark for me.

Hi Don that looks like Yixing clay to me. Yes, they can be traced to different makers, that's what makes them valuable or not. Most times it is very hard to find a maker, and I've been told to list with a low starting bid that I can live with, and mention signed/marked, and the buyers will find it, and determine its value. Most of the buyers are from China and will know if it's by someone known/famous. Of course it's always great if you can find the maker, but again, not always possible.:)

Thank you, tyeldom3, that was very helpful. I haven't decided whether to sell yet or not. I have a couple of shelves with small satsuma vases and boxes. The teapot would look really cute there. Is there some special way I should treat it to preserve it? The finish looks a little dull especially on the lid and top rim.

That's a great question Don, and I wish I had a great answer. :joyful: I've had that same issue before, and not knowing how to correct it, I just left it alone:( I'm going to see if I can find any info regarding that though. I'll be back if I find anything interesting. It may have something to do with the liquid of the tea never touching the lid and top rim. It seems that the tea making process "seasons" the pot.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That is great, KHL! I like the blue color of the one in the first link, too.
