Hi all . It was perfect weather today here in n. fla so I went to the flea market for the first ime in years . Apparently 1000s of others had the same idea too ! Picked up this lovely thing , one of those had to haves . Its 4 1/2 high and 4 wide ,Im guessing Mexican ? Id love to know what its made of , and is the pink coral ? Any and all input is always appreciated .
You hit it right on the head Brad , thanks ! Could be 30s , could be last week ! I still love it though .
johnny - I think it is newer and meant to be a representation of an Aztec mask. I found this one, a little more refined than yours, but the same idea. This one is 8" on the stand. Yours may have had a stand at one time. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AZTEC-MASK-...rpentine-Eye-Tiger-INLAY-MEXICO-/252344168570
I think everyone is right , much newer. I see now where the base was attached . Thank you all for the input .
My only experience of obsidian were the pebbles called Apache tears... until the carved pieces from Mexico started showing up. I was pretty much under the impression that obsidian was hard to come by. Not so. Mexico is the 3rd largest source, Oregon and the Rift Valley in Africa having larger deposits. Here is a volcanic flow in the Newbury Volcanic Monument: 170 million cubic yards of obsidian and pumice, and not that old at about 1300 years (about the time of the Viking raids in England). And this isn't the only deposit by far. http://www.npexp.com/newberry-national-volcanic-monument/
