    Hi,

    I bought several antique wooden figurines on eBay - obviously chess figurines, but larger than usual. They closely remind so called Lewis Chess from 13th century Scotland.

    Are they bookends or just some variation of Chess figurines, and what can be their age.

    I am attaching the pictures of several figures :

    1) Pair of King and Queen - what is interesting is that Queen has some antique language inscriptions in the lower half (row by row in the middle - is it written from left to right, or in the opposite direction ?) ;

    2) Pair of Bishop and King - figurines look extremely antique live ;

    3) The Monk figure looking like Pawn that could match the first set
    (the styles, eyes are similar) ;

    4) Pictures of Lewis Chessmen from 12th century as an example.

    All figurines look more like French (especially the Bishop), or Spanish.

    Can it be that such souvenirs were produced in some Eastern countries
    (for ex. by Moors who liked to play Chess) to export to antique European
    countries , such as Spain or France.

    Thanks in advance for your advice and insight,
    Paul

    My guess is 1960s Mexican. Charming but a tad beat up.

    I remember those. Spanish I think. 1970s or a bit before.

    Would anybody knows by any chance if 2 Chinese wooden figurines displayed below are old (for ex. 19th century or earlier). They look very impressive live.
    Thank you,
    Paul
