April Maynards auction , interesting Nuu Chah Nulth Plank Headdress

This one could break all records.........or not !

I bought a plank headdress & african mask together on eBay in the early 90's.
The seller had no clue.

For years I tried to identify it, as more than just what I knew it to be.

Then one day I came upon this RCMP magazine cover, and it surprised me as being almost a duplicate to the one I own , but for certain being carved and painted by the same Artist.

so now I had a date , where at the very least , was the last time a plank headdress of this make & model was seen.

( to be quite honest....I'm putting up this photo in the hopes the bots will snag it....like they did to my gallery photo's , in the hopes a prospective buyer will find this online...)

Yes,hope it does very well for you. So a very specialised item.What is the set reserve price? (if I may ask)

 

These guys don't do reserves , but..... the estimate is 800 - 1200 , and if the bidding doesn't get near the low estimate it won't sell.
That said .....I expect it to blow by the estimate.................
Although more recent artists have made these plank headdresses for sale.....



artists from the past had these commissioned by tribal elders for native use in dance ceremonies..

All very interesting. Thanks.. I obviously have no knowledge in such things but the estimate seems very conservative for such a unique item (specifically one that was used and originally commissioned by tribe elders) Hopefully it sets a new record!

 

mine has some damage.....and grass instead of feathers......
but it's still the only one out there..!!

Here's a dirty little secret.........that's no secret at all.....

Many auction houses will post estimates based on what other recent auctions have sold for,,, looking for the lower end to entice bidders into thinking they can have a good chance at an item.
Buyers.....sit and wait until those bidders have exhausted their efforts.......

the shop was active in 1959........

Very nice! Great colours. Admittedly those feathers does add some flare..

 

Well.....we didn't break no records.......but $2400 without juice....
S0 , unless I see it next month on some guys web site for $6500......

Last year I sold some stuff on auction and found 4 of the items again in an antique shop 2 weeks later. Wasn’t the best of feelings (but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles as my dad would say)

 

The auction house VP said to me it all averages out in the end.
So...I tried to offer up a mixed bag of items ....but as my want, quality at every level.
Some items went lower that I'd hoped....some went higher.
Spring auctions are not the Big Bang and knowing what to bring to the table is at best...a crap shoot.
I could have made several thousand more that I did, but was reluctant to add certain items I thought would not do well.
I was though, correct about that as I watched similar items of high value , get less than I would have expected for ones I held back.

All in all, there were deals to be had on many of my items, and I turned wood , stone , bone , ivory , paper and metal ect...into much appreciated cash. !!
