Hi, can anyone tell me anything about this Imari bowl/plate? It measures 8 1/2" diameter and has a lip that is 1 3/8" tall. Would this be considered a plate or a shallow bowl? Is it Japanese or Chinese? Anyone have any idea how old it is?

Thank you! Do I have the mark turned the right way? Do you know what it says?

    Thanks for responding, kardinalisimo.

Have you checked gotheborg.com to see if he shows the mark on his website?

Oh, yes, I should have mentioned that. I did check gotheborg and didn't find it.

    Thanks!

Looks more Satsuma than Imari to me, but I know next to nothing about china.

You know more than you think. I rather agree on Satsuma.

Fairly modern, I think. That's one of those flower/leaf marks.

Really Satsuma? I'm ignorant, I know, but I guess I associated the patterns with the colors. Like red and blue = Imari, lots of gold = Satsuma. I think I also associated Satsuma with pottery rather than porcelain.

Okay, so fairly modern and Japanese Satsuma. So, can anyone tell me is this considered a plate or a shallow bowl?

    Thanks again!

I'd call it a bowl. Remember that traditional Japanese eating does not really do plates.

Satsuma? I thought sastuma is usually earthenware and yellowish?

Yes, this is not Satsuma, it is Imari porcelain from the end of Edo period. The mark is a variation of the Fuku mark, I think, and is often seen on Imari.

Ah, and I think this is a dish, not a bowl...

Okay, I have another Japanese piece that has me flummoxed. Here are the pictures....

I think it's Satsuma. It is heavier unlike porcelain, more like pottery or earthenware. It is very finely painted. Just beautiful in my opinion. Is it a saki cup? It is 2 7/8" tall x 2 3/4" diameter....kind of large for a usual saki cup as far as I know. Can anyone read the mark and the calligraphy inside?

    I appreciate all the help!

Hi again, this is, as the mark says, Kutani porcelain. It should be from the 2nd half of the 20th century and is a tea cup. I cannot read the calligraphy for you. Mat
