    It looks like a pine needle basket with a tree bark bottom from here. I'm not getting a very sharp focus from those pictures though, so I'm vacillating between bundled grass and pine needles. And maybe the bottom is a leather.

    I think the bottom is bark. Birch maybe. Probably pine needles I’d think.

    Great Lakes sweetgrass basket...
    birch bark base.....and likely the missing lid as well.....

    Thanks! Any guess to age? Was there something in the bottom originally or are the holes there for securing bottom while constructing basket? Or otherwise?

    imo....the weaver was punching holes for a top design.....but decided to use the bark as a base...
