I assume this is Victorian era? Maybe 1860-1890? Wondering if it’s more likely to be glass or stone? A bit hard to tell for me. Thought glass initially, then wondered, now guessing glass again. It’s a beautiful color though and has me wondering still. Also assuming gold filled or rolled gold not solid. 2E1A38FE-05DF-482B-830C-249D73DD8656.jpeg 16D360C0-E302-4D9E-A64B-EEE4E054672E.jpeg A5D027EC-50A1-4C83-A682-5FD0EED3E345.jpeg 0FA1051F-B383-49AB-A0FE-75FEE788F2BD.jpeg

If stone would garnet cabs be most likely option? Not ruby or amethyst, right?

I see glass as well, but lovely colour

If it were a stone ruby would be the closest colour I think

You could hit it with some uv to be sure it's not

Ruby would glow bright red under uv

But that wouldn't rule out garnet, which could be an option, I don't see amethyst at all

Thanks. There were MANY things on the tables. This set was one of the first I picked up and the first I negotiated for. I guess because they weren’t precious metal (at least not marked and probably not anyways) no one wanted them. I was there in the final hour of day on of a two day sale and they were still there waiting to be had. I was a bit surprised. I didn’t get them for nothing but I have a feeling I’ll do well anyways.

I thought the color resembles that of rubies more too. I just figured rubies would be less likely to be used in something that’s probably not gold. Garnet being way more common and varying in shades seemed a safer bet. I didn’t know about them responding to UV. I’ll check that.

Doesn't really matter if they are not.

They are are lovely full sumptuous design, and old as well

More fools they are the people who only look for precious metals

It looks like gold-filled or rolled gold and glass from here. 1890-ish I'd think.

I’ve got a brooch like this and it’s glass but never say never!.
Great to have the matching set :)

Gorgeous, J, I would have bought them too. 1880s imo.
Possibly not a set, different leaves, but certainly a very happy marriage.
Gilded, not gold-filled, and probably not rolled gold either.

19th Century gilded jewellery has value for collectors. Things don't have to be solid gold to have quality or value.
Not all rubies do, in fact most rubies don't glow bright red. Burmese rubies glow bright red like devil's eyes.:vamp: Other rubies glow orangey red or not at all. It depends on the composition/inclusions.
This is not a ruby, Burmese or otherwise.

Ya mean this one I threw out because it didn't glow red, might have actually indeed been a ruby ?

And if you're throwing rocks like that, throw them at me! Provided Bear or Any don't get their catchers' mitts up first.

What a lovely set! Glass is my feeling too, mimicking almandine garnet.
