I was following this lot because I hadn't ever seen a well carved cameo in tiger's eye. I also really liked the setting. It may be signed underneath the pin stem, but I couldn't make it out. It sold today well above the estimate of E400-E600 for an eye-popping E6800 plus premium.

She's spectacular. If the gemstones are real, I can see why she hammered where she did. Surprised Drouot estimated her so low.

I only have a couple in tiger eye. One is this massive Hercules:

But he's so flat compared to that menacing Medusa.

I actually did think that we had seen the Louet name before, then somehow managed not to find it in a search of the site, only Jouet in connection with something else, so concluded my memory was wrong. But @kyratango has found it in the Signatures thread, a whole family's worth.

Among today's suggestions on things I would perhaps like to buy came this auction lot:

Interesting that they just said 'cameo' without representing it as being the same material as the - wrongly identified - beads. Their estimate of 80 - 120 GBP suggests they know it's not coral.

Key words: conch coral cameo beads

For years I wanted a nice but cheap broken cameo to have a kyratisation try... ;)
I just won this one, so much details on the 4cm piece!
    Signed on back...
    Lots of dirt...
The pics are from the listing, I enhanced them for better view, of course new pics will be posted upon arrival:)

What in the world happened to that poor thing?! Have never seen one splitting in quite that way. Well, you do like a challenge. Aluminum foil is not going to fix this one, except maybe for making a form to preserve the overall curvature. Good luck.

MW: This Victorian shell cameo brooch depicts the goddesses Tykhe and Nemesis in yellow gold. An oval shell cameo intricately carved with the classical profiles of two goddesses with curling ringlets, one with a radiating halo whilst the other is veiled, above them the crescent moon shines and in front of them a dove with wings spread clutching a cornucopia, all to a decorative domed border featuring rope twists and scalloped details, fitted to the reverse with a hinged pin and secure C-scroll closure.

Open mouth insert foot. At least the carving is good, unless this is a brown version of those blue things.

How dare he pontificate in that manner! And doesn't he have staff who "fact check" him? How embarrassing.

Tykhe, usually spelled Tyche, was Fortuna to the Romans; there is a lot of crossover between these two & Cybele. A cornucopia is one of her attributes.

I love Nemesis & think of her as the Goddess of Comeuppance.
