Hi, I bought this ring in a charity shop this week. Marked 18K JG (could it be Jack Gutschneider or was his always JG JLRY?), it appears to be a black star sapphire or similar, and the white stones make my diamond tester zing and the lights go up to red, but since I bought it from China I have no idea if it's accurate or not! thanks in advance

JG is the maker but I haven't a clue who it is. Odds are it really is 18K. My spidey sense agrees with your gem tester.

Hi Evelyb, thanks so much for your thoughts. Makers are so hard to identify. Yes, I feel the same about the diamonds, especially since it's 18K.

It looks like a nicer setting. I'm with Evelyb odds are it's the real deal.

Those diamond testers do usually work, even if made in China.

Thanks heaps Lucille, I agree! I just gave it a quick clean in hot water, ammonia and dish washing liquid and it looks fantastic!

Can you see a star in the sapphire?

Hi Holly, no I can't but I have another ring that sometimes I can see the star and other times not. Also, when I looked online some of the pictures showed stars others did not. I just had another look online and even cat's eye diopsides and cabochon smoky quartz are similar. I have also just looked at my other ring through a lighted loupe and can easily see a double star, but also the stone has kind of herring bone lines that make it look like banded agate! So had a look through this ring's stone with it and can just make out the star at some angles almost disappearing into the setting, and it has fine lines across it. Not sure what this means!

Looks like the sapphire was not orientated and cut too flat for a good star to appear. Sapphire/ruby crystals are Hexagonal, the lines radiate out from the center of the crystal to the edges of the stone.
