Pics are in broad sunshine. My UV light renders it dead white. ~2 3/4" X ~2 1/4", ~170 grams. In hand, it looks like a chunk of Antarctic ice!
Without a gem tester, how may I determine what it is...or isn't? I collect rocks, but only for their apparent (to me) unique beauty...I'm grossly ignorant beyond the absolute basics. Thanks for lookin'!

It may be blue quartz. You might try google lensing it. I think there are some rocks and mineral apps that would help you.

I don't think quartz comes in blue. Pink yes, but not blue. Natural blue topaz is a much lighter color and fairly rare. Kyanite maybe...?

It doesn't look like agate, how many sides does the crystal in the 4th photo have?

I cannot see an entire 'crystal' on any face...so really can't answer with any accuracy, Holly.

I've never seen blue quartz before; generally when it's an odd color, it's art glass marketed as 'quartz".

Hard to say what this is based just on the pics. Maybe fluorite? Maybe calcite? Have you done a scratch/hardness test yet?

EDIT - probably not fluorite based on your UV light test. I'm leaning towards calcite. How did you find it?

It's not common and I don't think really ever used as a gemstone -but it definitely exists. I find small bits of it that wash down from the mountains in the stream on the back of my property(central Virginia).

It belongs to my GF, who has it in one of her Bonsai planters. She has no recollection about when or where she acquired the piece.

Ellensburg blue would look less crystalline than yours, I think.

Fluorite would be my best guess based on pix.
