Pictured, a late 19th c. plaque with inlay of what appears to be a hard substance such as bone ? My question... what are the other materials used in this time period and what was the production method for doing such intricate work ? s-l1600.jpg

    Gorgeous, Drew.
Anything with a contrasting colour. Often other woods of different natural and stained colours. Also ivory, mother of pearl, brass, silver.
Carving and delicate fretwork, and sanding any edges down afterward. Some people still do it now, with a lot of patience and skill.

    Agree, it is called marquetry.
The fine details in the bone were usually done with ink.

Beautiful piece! There are several how to videos on you tube of current marquetry techniques. Like all you tube, some better than others.

There is a simple and very "coherent" video by the V&A on YouTube that I recommend if you only have a passing interest in this process.
