Hi all, I picked this up the other day, now trying to determine where it is from. Doing on-line searching and with Ganesha on it, I'm thinking India, but that is just a guess. The chain parts are non-magnetic, so maybe sterling? Would this be a tourist/souvenir piece?
    Any information appreciated
    thanks for looking:)

    You're right.:)
Very unlikely, sterling silver is not traditional in India, so it is rarely used for traditional pieces like this. Indian silver ranges from very low to 1000 fineness, but no .925 (sterling). But the colour of this necklace is too yellowish for sterling silver. With that colour I expect either non-silver, or a low silver fineness, maybe .500 or even lower.
It is good to have it tested though, photos can only convey so much.
It is traditional piece, but these are often sold to tourists.

Lovely necklace! I’ve got one like it (so you know I’m not lying) but much simpler :)

It looks like "white brass", a trade name for an Indian nickel alloy. White brass jewelry was made for pretty and not to fool anyone.

The term 'white brass' can refer to several alloys, not all of them contain nickel though. When white brass contains nickel, it is often called nickel silver or 'German silver'.
Although the necklace could be non-silver, as I said above, I don't think it is nickel silver. Either another silver tone alloy or very low grade silver alloy with a fair bit of copper imo.
Either way, it isn't precious metal.
And often made to emphasize the wearer's identity.:)

It never contained any silver at all when the name was used here.
