Nothing exciting to report-but just got a half-way decent Loupe ($37) opens up a whole new world (...duh). What fun ! Lithos, etchings, jools, arrowheads, pots, rocks, dust bunnies-yippeee ! PS-I did take 40 yrs ...
Well, bosco...with some of us, things take a little longer. 40 years is above th' mean, let us all note!
Whit-Seems like only yesterday I was wearing a 'flat top' and waiting for the day when i could shave.I remember my Dad looking at me and saying-'The novelty will fade...'. He was right,it's fading-but from the top of my head, sadly my chin still needs a razor.
I got similar counsel from my Pappy...an' I'm in identical situation to your's, bosco...comes with th' territory!
The standard is 10x, but I have everything up to a 40x handy. And a rug/stamp magnifier to shoot through. It folds up and unfolded forms a fixed focus stand. The one in my purse is a bitty 12x that's as old as I am. My late dad had it in his model train tool chest.
I have one of these, quite a sturdy brass one with black enamel paint, now flaking away, to highlight the markings. I was told it was something printers use, to check dots per inch. I use it more than the 2 loupes & 2 magnifying glasses I have within reach, although rarely unfold it. The lens is quite good.
I have a small loupe that folds into itself. Made of plastic and not the best, but it fits in my wallet so it works for me when I am on the road
Got this one-good ratings & $38.00.I did find some Triplets for less (& way more),but I figure once every seventy years, live a little ! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EXPWU8S?tag=911metallurgist-20&th=1&psc=1&geniuslink=true * Now I have to figure out what else I could really use at a decent price. Here's a few things I've seen mentioned here: 1. UV Light- never shopped much glass before (now finding more decent $2-$5 items) & I think it's good to detect poss restoration work. 2.Gem Tester-A good one might way over my budget ? ** Many of the remaining testing prods seem to be household items-Simichrome,409,etc.I'll have to study these more as some may actually be more harmful than beneficial. There's undoubtedly some that are special order. 3.SNEAKINESS-Ways to pull a Loupe out of the pocket when no ones looking ! PS-Hope I did OK w/ the Loupe ? We love Fabrics & Rugs-Rug/Stamp mag is also a good addition.
it's. for fabric, to check the thread count............but really , it doesn't care what it magnifies .............
Yay, a loupe! They are nuthin' but fun! I have several, and keep one in my purse. You never know when you'll need to loupe a piece of jewelry ......
I just checked a small stone or hard-fired ceramic Mayan head I've had for eons last night.I'll have to compare to closeups of similar pieces to guesstimate. The Loupe fits perfectly in my watch pocket.
Yeah...they're great. Purpose built for that task; focal length part of the folding flip-flop construction, with the window in th' floor calibrated in size to make thread counting easier. But they're no equivalent to a triplet by any means, neither in optical quality nor magnification.
I always forget my thread count,so one would be good.Watch-pocket 'pret-a-porter' off the rack Woolrich vest ($9 Thrift).
