I found this nice marble topped table at a thrift store for $45.00.
After a bit of TLC, it looks great!
I think it is 1870s, give or take?
My big question....is it a library table, a parlor table or even a writing desk?
    It has a shallow drawer.
    What do you all think?

Nice renaissance revival example and you are about right on date, possibly just a tad later. Possibly a sewing table, though I would expect it to have a bin. Otherwise, a parlor table.

$45! The world has gone topsy-turvy, hasn't it?

I wonder what the original owner paid accounting for inflation…A particle board folding table at ikea would run you more than $45 most likely.

Yes, definitely Ren Rev, circa 1845-1860, with a turtle back marble top. Walnut, I would assume. Nice higher-end piece! It probably sported the family Bible with pride of place in the formal parlour.

Yay! I have never seen one with those two Nagas before, wonderful. I have a few Jepara boxes myself, but those Nagas is something to be on the lookout for.

Would think it a bargain at 10X the price. Agree on a slightly later date ca. 1885 and walnut, but will have to go against the flow and say library table, due to the drawer and overall rectangular trestle shape, with parallel feet at each end. More of a half-turtle top than the traditional turtle, which would be rounded on all sides. A renaissance revival piece alright, showing the influence of the "big boys" like Herter Bros. in New York. No reason this can't be used as a parlor table (or any other kind); just take care of it! Seems to be no worries on that front.

Great price for Stracci, but I'm sadder than ever that my beloved Victorian stuff still gets so little $. I had hoped we were on the road to recovery, or at least parity.

I'm with Fid, it looks like a hall table to me too.

I used to have my grandmother's Jepara box on a nice antique demi-lune hall table btw. No use with my husband who throws every incoming magazine on top of it, and even leaves tools there.:arghh::( The Jepara boxes are now on the window sill, which appears to be safe from screwdrivers and magazines. For now.:nailbiting:

They are so amazing in detail. It's nice to learn that mine is special with two serpents!
I paid $5 at a yard sale from someone who clearly didn't appreciate it!
