Featured Mystery Bronze Vase-Help ID ?

    Here's a bronze vase I've had for a while.It's about 6 1/2" tall,either cast or hammered (the walls uniformly are abt. 3/16" thick),and I can find no markings.Thanks for the help. Bronze1.jpg Bronze2.jpg Bronze3.jpg

    I think Asian (Japanese or Chinese) and cast...looks to be high copper content. Weight? Does it ring when thumped with a knuckle?

    Thanks Whittier & Book-It weighs 36.5 ounces (little things heavy), and it rings (short high ring,not like a Tibetan singing bowl though).

    Yup...heavy-walled and finely finished would sound like that. I'm surprised...and puzzled...by a lack of any marking. But, hell...I haven't seen everything, yet. I'll assume the interior is as well finished as the exterior...the bead-treatment on the foot is also a bit unusual. A delightful and very desirable piece, bosko...

    Also...every time I look at your first pic, the 'bloom' on the surface reminds me so much of a tree-ripe Italian prune...an' I can almost see purple there, too!

    Yep-It's got that ripe dusky prune bloom to it.By 'bead treatment on the foot' do you mean the raised lip on the base ?
    I'll have query some cast bronze vase specialists in Japan & China,and google images w/ the same terms.Thanks again for the insights.

    I did find this-'Takaoka bronzeware began in 1609 at Kanayamachi in present-day Takaoka City,Japan.Today, over 90% of all cast-bronze products in Japan are made in Takaoka.' It's a start and some pieces reminiscent of mine are unsigned.The box (long gone) it came in had the provenance-sure would be easier if it was signed.

    I also think Japanese. Relatively modern. Patina is applied

    Yep,I'm thinking Postwar Japan.I'm going to send some pics to a few national/international Bonsai/Ikebana Societies-folks with a micro experts view.The dedicated Bonsai collectors are extraordinary-they do some serious mountain climbing to find these specimen trees in cracks and crevices.
