Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Curious about.... @journeymagazine posted his "rack", which brought to mind what we walk by all the time and never think about!!! Was from my parents....in a moving carton from about 3 moves prior to we siblings UNpacking EVERYTHING after our Mom passed back in '03... I saw it first and claimed "dibs" (we'd each do that on occasion.....there was JUST SO MUCH!!)...I personally think the deer head is English Oak, but could be WAY off base.... and someone could PLEASE correct me if I'm WRONG!! He's on a wall pretty high up, so on precarious step stools I did the best estimated yard stick measuring I could! No Marks, NO receipt (of course...Mom's MO!) but from 3 moves ago, she'd had it a LONG time....NO she never went out of the country either!!! I LOVE the carving....altho not elaborate--very simple!! SO, TOP of rack to NOSE..straight down...approx. 25"; Ears straight down to nose...approx. 13"; Ear over to ear...approx. 10"; and Width of Rack tip to tip...approx. 21". Would love to know mostly what you think his age might be, I have no idea as to value, but know how you all feel about that, so I won't ask! He gets a mini santa hat on one side of the rack and a scarf at Christmas!!! Thanks for ALL and ANY input!!!:happy::):) OH, and when I say "Straight Down" in measuring, I mean straight down VERTICALLY, NOT running down the face....if that makes sense.....like....parallel with the wall......

I was thinking elk. But a little Googling & think I'm wrong. Strange mount.

@Bakersgma, because of the angle I had to get the pictures at, I think the antlers are "out of perspective" larger looking.....sorry 'bout that.....

But they do have the wide "sort of flat or slightly curved" section of the moose, right?

There are, as well as elk and reindeer.
European moose have similar heads to North American ones though. This one is from Norway:

Looks like red deer stags grow antlers [scooped by Holly] similar to this, but do not live in North America.

Sorry, there are many red deer farms in the U.S and even Australia.

OK. Always learning. They are not native to North America, I should have said.

@Hollyblue is correct, it is a red deer.

The word you guys are looking for is "palmated", for the flattened part.

You just beat me to it.:playful: Our red deer don't have antlers like that, but our fallows do. And the sweet face is more like a fallow.

Some folks in Texas even have fallow deer as pets. I don't think deer can be housebroken, so they must live outside. This would be an easy sale to that part of the world if anyone ever managed to pry it off you wall. (not happening)

Nice Antlers and I love the carving even if it does look a bit like my little chestnut pony. Thank God he didn't give her antlers as she has attitude in bucketfuls.
