I believe this is a pastel? Need a little help in deciphering signature. Most likely an amateur. May(Mary?) Jo? Witt?(Wits?) Hopkins. TIA

Hmmm Bakersgma. I found an author of a 1939 book by that name. Same time frame. Could be one and the same. Thanks

Looks like May T. Witt Hopkins

    I can't see a De there although it could be a J.

Although it does look more like "J." to me, I also think it's actually "De".

Googling "May De Witt Hopkins" and "May DeWitt Hopkins" brings up book references to books and songs a woman by that name wrote in the 40s.

Fudging the data to fit the answer you want is not good research.

No fudging... it looked to me like it could be read either way, though I agreed that it looked more like "J." Sorry if I wasn't clear. :)

I vote for traditional script capital D...clearly forming the name De Witt.

    Who's tradition?
I was never taught to write my Ds that way, and I was taught back in the 1950s, and used it a lot, as my name is Demaris.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I may just have to throw it out there and hope someone with the same last name is looking.

Could be a lower case "d" as in May de Witt Hopkins.

Because the references from Google books are from around the same time period, and show creative works by someone with the same name, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was the same woman as your painter. But I imagine it would be pretty hard to prove.

That is what I'm thinking Pat. I'm sure it will be a long shot at selling anyway.
