Found this on eboo tonight, safe to say I'm tempted...

Is this one of those instances where marks were added later in its life? I know they will do that sometimes. I can't quite make sense of the marks as described in the listing.

Oh how deliciously noncommittal! I'm making myself sleep on it at least. Hopefully that doesn't bite me like it has for some jewelry on there.

Lucky that fancy pants is my middle name then!

    You're enabling me Komo...:hilarious:

Does it actually date to 1793/4 then?
    The spoons are newer.

Call me Patty Practical, but I really give things like this excruciating consideration when paying market rate.

They give the weight of the salt cellar as 424.6 grams. I assume that includes the weight of the crystals. Might be nice to know the weight of the silver on its own.

They mention"chips on the crystal", "age stains" and "curvatures". I'm not sure what they mean by "curvatures". Dents maybe? Age stains? If it's silver not sure what those would be. If they have photos of any of this I'd take a good look.

Best of luck with your decision. :)

I love it,gorgeous. When I first saw it I thought it was a very posh antique 'Doorknob Holder'.

Thank you! Practical is what I needed, now I can run through all the checks with a clear head.

I have double checked all the marks, their findings are correct. We have a 1793 mark by the Silversmith Association, a Parisian silver standard (950) and a silver medium object mark, both 1819-1838. The makers mark is similar to Denis Colombier, perhaps he changed his mark at some point but otherwise its an unknown one.

I will contact them about those points Lucille, I calculated the silver value at 250g to be safe, but since I'm asking about the dents (they have one photo of a chip in the crystal) I'll ask about the weight. Perhaps by age stains they meant tarnish?

Yes, it would look perfect on a french dining table in an apartment on the Cote d'Azur, but beyond that I do wonder if its not a tad too fancy haha

I calculated 250g of silver to be safe, which comes to very slightly under asking price. To me it seems cheap but what do I know...

I should probably add that this was in a french auction and so the seller is basing his information off of their listing.

This concerns slightly... But the green could be whatever they put in the other 5% or just some stuff on top of it, the yellow could be just tarnish, but that handle is a little wonky lol

    Are the crystals missing lids?

What a really fun conversation piece as well! The green could be from the salt. My sterling shakers get some 'oxidation' or discoloration if salt is left on them.
