From Mexico ca. 1970's, Made of terracotta, hollow, 6 inches tall. I believe these unglazed reproductions of both animals and human forms were interoperations of ancient pieces for the tourist trade with patina added to look so. Question is, what part of Mexico or culture are these copying ?

Yours is unusual to me but generally they’re west coast. The prehistoric ones were found in shaft tombs. They’re fat because they were a food source.

Right…My poodle covers his ears if we talk about these as I do love the ceramics. There’s a fabulous estate to visit for those interested in this world (if you haven’t been) in Mexico City. It’s the estate of Delores Olmedo who was a patron (cough cough) to Diego Rivera. Her collection of DR and FK is fabulous but the estate itself is amazing and she’s (I believe) the one who brought the Xoloitzcuintle back from near extinction. The dogs are still being bred there (at least when I was there 5 years ago) and I remember the sign talking about them at their outside pen. The signage said how incredibly friendly they are. Maybe so, but I stood there for about 20 minutes and consider myself a dog person (and cannot live without a dog) but I couldn’t get any to interact with me. Here’s a pic of the dogs, the Olmedo prehistoric west coast shaft tomb collection. I would so love just one…

    And a few more of the estate and found the sign LOL! 2AC45B2D-DBE2-447D-8C2D-338E14B734F2.jpeg 29504C30-6F99-4E9E-815D-762BB7293789.jpeg CDC1C8EA-C850-46D3-8BA7-4674588FA311.jpeg CDC1C8EA-C850-46D3-8BA7-4674588FA311.jpeg 29504C30-6F99-4E9E-815D-762BB7293789.jpeg FAD85A09-CB7A-44AA-A0DB-3FA758440D7F.jpeg 2AC45B2D-DBE2-447D-8C2D-338E14B734F2.jpeg

Equally Jalisco. Found in west coast shaft tombs. They were Nayarit but modern ones like the OP’s are found all over Mexico so no real way to identify. I go nuts over these. Have always wanted one but never gave in although I drool all over them every year at Santa Fe ethno market.
