Hello all. I have this tile top side table or plant stand that I could use some help with. 25" high and 16" square. Is it homemade? The "fretwork" seems a little sloppy. Thanks in advance for any help at all.

    Thanks...Dale

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

YEAH, the small fretwork doesn’t look too precise, but for a plant stand, and maybe it’s someone’s first try at making one!! Not too bad! And you won’t be ruining a table top!!!:happy: Didja ever try cutting out any fretwork??? Not really fun or easy!

Hi. No, never done any woodworking. So you think it's probably a home project then? Thanks for the response.

I don't think home project. My initial reaction was Moroccan but, with those tiles being Japanese, I don't know. The whole thing could be Japanese.

Hi. I was wondering if "Moroccan" was popular when the tiles were made. I think it spent some time outside. When we got it, the support for the tiles was falling apart. We had to put it back together, the only reason we got a look at the back of the tiles. Thanks for your input.

Just a question - is it usual for the tiles to just be placed in the frame, not attached to the background?

If older, some of these DK tiles, sell for a fair bit, alone.

I thought that was strange too. Even after replacing the board, there was still room for the tiles to sit underneath,

I don't think those tiles are original to it.

I agree, tiles could be a later addition - your pics don't show what the tiles are sitting on so hard to be sure. If so, the construction and style looks kind of 20th century rustic Mexican to me (assuming you are in the US - you didn't say where you found it).

Hi. Sorry, they were sitting on a thin piece of rotting plywood. Looked like it was wet for a while. And I found it in a thrift store in Houston, Tx.

    Thanks...Dale

Think the tiles may be worth more than the table.

Just want to make sure you've noticed the tile's plum blossom symbol. Someone with more knowledge than I may be able to identify the leaf.

    Stylised gingko leaf.

I surmise that had a pierced and/ or MOP inlay wooden top once.

Actually, it looks closer to bamboo. But not sure that's right.

    Perhaps it's oak.

Oaks are properly serrated edges. You're looking at the big blue ones, yes? Thinking about it, they're very like a stylised young eucalyptus.

Aha. Got it. Acer distylium, the Hitotsuba Maple. It's non palmate.
