Top of Vase ?

    Could someone explain why the top of this vase is finished like the photo.Ive come across this finish a couple of times but don’t know why it’s left like this any ideas ? F16707B9-A383-4A48-88A5-584C1DD21789.jpeg

    I don't understand what you think is wrong with it. Can we see it from the side, plus a look at the whole thing, including any marks?

    Is there a hole in the bottom of the "vase"?

    The other question is if there's a metal rim missing. If that's a raw edge someone painted there may have been a sterling or brass rim that went walkabout. Alternately as someone else suggested it might have been a lamp.

    Yes, I'll bet Pat is thinking it could be a lamp base? Or missing a lid? Or just...because.

    Maybe it has been reduced (cut down)? Common thing to see on oriental porcelain that has suffered damage.
