    Hi. Please share your thoughts about this carved and painted totem pole.

    Im not having any luck with the name Hudson West.

    Maybe the bottom animal is a snake or eel or lamprey?

    Is this kind of painted pole just kinda kitsch-y and unsophisticated?

    It's 15" tall.

    Thank you.

    eagle, raven , killer whale..... old growth red cedar wood.
    Northwest Coast
    there is almost no NWC design structure to the paint...but the carvings are recognizable .
    circa ,,, 1930 to 50's I'd think
    the poor artist has tried well, but likely has not seen a real pole in a long time.

    @all_fakes will have more specifics,,,

    ps. the names are in ball point and likely have no reference to the carver ... as in a gift between friends..

    I'd go along with Komo, though I'd say the usage of NW Coast forms is so general I'm not sure it could be attributed to any particular tribal group. Made somewhere in SE Alaska or in BC by someone, likely native, who'd seen totem poles but was not trained in carving them.
    (The bottom figure represents the normal depiction of orca or killer whale, inverted with the tail curled over; but the tail and dorsal are rather distorted compared to normal forms.)

    it's the red cedar, making me place it south rather than northern...
