I found this in a box of stuff left to me by my mom. She grew up in a carnival & I think this poster/flyer was a internal (for carnival & fairground owners and workers) piece mailed or given to workers? I understand the thanking the fairgrounds they played at, but why so much on being a good citizen? Maybe this was from during the cold war & it was a civic duty thing? Any other ideas? - I'd really like to know what this was! Thanks!
Likely produced during the Red Scare of the late 1940s and 1950s. Clothing supports those dates. Debora
Text tells you that it was targeted to "The Managers and Board of Directors of the following fairs and exhibitions" with "Our sincere thanks." Think it was just a way to show how patriotic the company was. Debora
Even though I don't collect it, I love old carnival stuff. Thanks for sharing! I bet your mom had some great stories!
(Reviving this old thread...) If you're thinking of donating, this place may be interested in having it: https://showmensmuseum.org/ It's mentioned that they even have, "one of burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee’s slinky black beaded costumes, which turned many a head back in the day she performed with the great Royal American Shows Carnival". https://gibtownshowmensclub.com/pageserver/museum
No not donating it, I'm sorry - I was born into the carry life and my mom was in it her whole childhood, I think. Fun fact - my dad had regular theatres & burlesque theatres later & I knew Gypsy Rose, Tempest Storm, Blaze Starr and others who would come & dance at my dad's club in Miami during the winter months. He had 1 theatre that included a 8 unit apartment building on the next street (the property went from 1 street to the next street), and I lived there, my aunt & cousins lived there, and some of the burlesque features who had a contract with my dad for a couple weeks to a couple months , would stay in a apartment instead of a 1 room hotel - we had barbecues on the weekends or went to the beach with them, too.
