Help with possible Royal Saxe Portrait vase.

    This charming piece has the E S Royal Saxe crown but not the wording above it. i have seen others with this mark stating it is Royal Saxe dating to about 1891.
    Vase is 6" tall

    There is a variation of the mark without the words Royal Saxe. If you are trying to sell I would state it just that way. ES Prussia/Germany collectors will understand. It's still Erdmann Schlegelmilch. The mark was used from circa 1890's to early 1900's according to Gaston's books.

    were these portraits typically hand painted or transfer ware?

    Almost always transfer ware. If you look closely you may be able to see the tiny dots that indicate transfers.
