This charming piece has the E S Royal Saxe crown but not the wording above it. i have seen others with this mark stating it is Royal Saxe dating to about 1891.
    Vase is 6" tall

There is a variation of the mark without the words Royal Saxe. If you are trying to sell I would state it just that way. ES Prussia/Germany collectors will understand. It's still Erdmann Schlegelmilch. The mark was used from circa 1890's to early 1900's according to Gaston's books.

were these portraits typically hand painted or transfer ware?

Almost always transfer ware. If you look closely you may be able to see the tiny dots that indicate transfers.

I thought so. Thanks again for your help.
Had to give her a bath and work on some pics. Since the sun is going to be vacationing for a while.
