Featured Hey Flora, Fiddle Dee Dee!

Just found this at a glorious Midwest U.S. antique show over the weekend. It bears a plaque entitled "Musicienne/Par Flora(sculpt.). It's about 30" high U.S. by 14" wide. It's about 50 pounds of solid bronze. It was created in Italy, and my guess on the years would be 1895-1905.

The price was so good for a statue of this size and weight that I bought it immediately, no haggling. I've searched for it online, and found another for sale at 10 times what I paid for it. Not that it's sold, mind you. But still....it provides an idea of what it might be worth.

Anyway, it's a puzzle as to who created it. "Flora" as both the title of the piece and name of the sculptor seems a little odd. Can any of you sleuths figure this one out? Thanks!!

She is called "Musicienne", French for musician (fem.), 'par Flora' means 'by Flora', and 'Sculpt.' is the same in English, short for sculptor. So Flora is the maker.

Pointing out that it does not say 'par Flora', it says 'par F. Flora'. I admit I thought it was T. Flora, but the Worthopedia listing sorted that out & if you look for it, you can just see the cross stroke on the first F.

 

The little brass tag on the front that says Flora looks like a later addition. Maybe one of the past owners couldn't interpret the French words correctly.

She's lovely and I would covet her as well. Is this and the Galle vase all you purchased this weekend? Will we be seeing more treasures?

 

It says 'par Flora Sculpt' below "Musicienne", near her foot, that was what I was referring to. F. Flora is inscribed separately.

I could easily have spent my life savings in a couple of hours there. Happily, I (sort of) resisted temptation and purchased only one more item: a large bronze elephant. I’ll post it one of these days soon.
If you’re interested, however, a friend is returning from the Brimfield, MASS show at the end of the week and I’ve got a few things coming. I’ll post them after things settle down.

 

I have a friend who does Brimfield, but he's mostly a jewelry and silver dealer. I wonder if they ran into each other. Probably not; it's a BIG show.
