I PURCHASED THIS AS A PRINT BUT WHEN I REMOVED FROM FRAME LOOKS MIRE LIKE AN ETCHING OR PRINT. SOME OF LEONARDO'S ORIGINAL HORSE DRAWINGS ARE POSED IDENTICAL BUT IN REVERSE..
THE BLACK AND WHITE HORSE ON HIS DRAWINGS ARE ACTUALLY ON OPOSITE SIDES FACING THE OTHER WAY AND DO NOT FORM A V WITH THEIR LEGS. ANOTHER DRAWING SHOWS A RIDER WITH A SWORD IN THE SAME SIDEAND POSE BUT HE HAS NO KNIFE ON BUTTOX AND HIS LEGS ARE NOT EXTENDED FORWARD LIKE THIS ONE..
I RECENTLY SAW ANOTHER STUDY MADE BY A LADY THAT ACTUALLY HAD THE RIDER WITH THE SAME KNIFE AND THE LEGS EXTENDED LIKE THIS ONE AND HAD NO OTHER HORSES. IT WAS UNFINISHED BUT
IT WAS IDENTICAL. I TRIED FINDING IT AGAIN BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. MAYBE SHE DID THIS ONE BUT FIRST I WANT TO KNOW IF THIS IS A DRAWING OR ETCHING?
NOTICE THAT IF YOU LOOK AT THE REVERSE OF THIS PICTURE, THE SWORD AND THE KNIFE ARE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. ALSO THE RIDERS OF THE WHITE AND BLACK HORSE ARE ON OPPOSITE SIDES.
I DONT KNOW IF ITS PAPER, HEMP, OR VELUM. ITS THIN AND FLEXIBLE...

Also, typing in all upper-case is considered 'yelling', and for me, at least, makes it hard to read your post.

    Sorry about upper case.
My eyesight is not good and
It's hard for me to see what I'm writing in lower case.

@kyratango, maybe a question for you, or anyone else "artsy".....isn't Vellum kind of 'translucent' and doesn't it kind of have ALMOST a 'waxy' feel rather than paper???? Maybe I'm not remembering it???

I don't know about vellum but I hope your right. It does feel waxie , its translucent, almost like a thin molded plastic .it bends but I dont want to bend it too much and have it snap or crack.

I can post a photo of some velum i have from around 1800 if you want to compare. I wouldn't call it waxy, but compared to paper, i guess you might say that.
It's basically thin rawhide. It still has the natural gluey substances that tanning removes or neutralizes. Those gluey substances bind the fibers and dry stiff and somewhat clear (translucent).

Actually, I did have time. Here are three photos. The first two show the backside, and then front side. Notice you can read the text through the back side. The third is a closeup of an area where the skin was stretched at a weak point of the hide, exposing internal hide fibers. This is velum prepared for a document. It has a very fine and even surface. These are scans off my scanner. Will try a photo tomorrow that might show the texture better with proper side lighting.

It is vellum. While I was doing research, I ran into an article of a professor who bought a drawing and he believes it was done by leonardo. He wrote a book about it, he even found the book from where the drawing was taken. I noticed his drawing had the same black border and the painting depicted sforza daughter. And the book was family history related. His drawing had small pin holes from where it was bound to book. My drawing also has small pin holes. And its book size. If that drawing was taken from the book , maybe this one was too. Now the number on the back of my drawing makes sense. I'm going to email the guy and see what he thinks.

Yours does look like it could well be velum, though I'm no expert. I'm sure there are differences in manufacture, especially between times and places (mine is USA ca. 1800). Here is a photo (not scan) of the backside of mine plus a close up from that photo. Let us know what you find out from the professor you mentioned.

    UPDATE.
I HAVE DONE LOTS OF RESEARCH AND COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT ITS A STUDY FOR THE UNFINISHED PAINTING BY LEONARDO DA VINCI
" THE ADORATION OF THE MAGI ".
WHO EVER DREW THAT BATTLE SCENE GRAB THE WRONG STUDY.
OTHER PAINTINGS OF THE SAME SUBJECT HAVE SAME SCENARIO OF A SOLDIER OR PERSON STOPING A MAN AND WOMAN IN HORSES.
IN THE STUDY I HAVE , THE HORSES AND SOLDIER ARE THE DEFINITE PROOF THAT IT CAME FROM THE SHOP OF LEONARDO OR DONE BY LEONARDO DA VINCI. THE POSE OF THE SOLDIER AND THE POSE OF THE HORSE REAR LEGS ARE IDENTICAL TO THE ONLY KNOWN BRONZE SCULPTURES ATTRIBUTED TO LEONARDO.. I LOOKED AT THE HORSE DRAWINGS DONE BY LEONARDO THAT ARE IN THE COLLECTION OF CODIXES.. CODEX 3 HAS A PARTICULAR DRAWING THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION BECAUSE IT HAS A OIL MARK THAT NOW I BELEIVE IS LEONARDO SECRET MARK. IF YOU PAY ATTENTION THE OIL SPOT IS LOCATED BEHIND THE DRAWING OF THE REAR HORSES LEGS JUST A LITTLE TO THE RIGHT APPEARS WHAT LOOKS LIKE A NOTATION BUT IN REALITY ITS LEONARDO SIGNATURE IN MIRROR WRITING.
IN MY STUDY THE TAIL OF HORSE ITS EXACTLY THE SAME IMAGE..
    I BELIEVE ITS NO COINCIDENCE.
UNTIL I DO FORENSIC EVALUATION OF MY STUDY I CANNOT PROVE IM RIGHT BUT IT DOES NOT TAKE A GENIUS TO SEE WHAT I SEE.
I JUST NEED TO FIND A PLACE IN RIVERSIDE CA THAT DOED THIS IMG_20240219_000533_(600_x_600_pixel).jpg
