So-called antiquing kits were big in the late 60s-70s. Looks like this one fell prey to the trend. For what it is worth, fits right in with the current shabby-chic paint trend.

Yeah. I think it is marketable in my area. Certainly nothing close to what some of them go for in original condition. Not sure how well the atomic legs fit it though. May look better with no legs or at least some closer to the style of the cabinet.

Definitely the ebay one looks a lot better in my opinion, but I think someone will take this one at the right price.

Legs like that (furniture...) ;) always make me wonder just when the item is going to fall over just because. :p

If you have a Restore or Habitat, or the like around, you may be able to find something better. :)

Thanks for sharing this disaster. One can hope that it was in fairly rough shape when it was "redone".

Agree w/Brad -- sort of does fit into the "modern" shabby craze so will probably find a buyer without much trouble.

There is a currently a unsold lamp at my local goodwill, been there a few weeks. Tall, ceramic with lots of colorful fruits in a bowl -pretty well done, looks Italian maybe. HOWEVER it appears that someone painted the entire thing avocado green, and then someone else tried to remove the paint, got tired at the 80% point, and donated it.

As I recall, this look was called, appropriately, 'distressed'. Now seen as just distressing!

Nice cabinet with those original brass pulls intact. I'd put the effort into restoring it if it were mine.

My mom went through a 70's phase painting and "antiquing" everything in sight! My dad then did his thing by adding a eagle or 1776 decal to everything! OY! I ended up with several family items that had been my grandparents; including a DARLING rock maple dinette with benches from the 20's. The lumber had been milled off the property... and mom had antiqued it olive green...aggggh! It had originally been white. My original thought was so strip it down and bring it back to wood. LOL... apparently, it was milk paint? I could NOT get it off. I did however, get off the green and so it is white again!

That's the best case scenario - taking it back to original paint. Sometimes can be done with windsor chairs that have several different colors of paint, but it is a very tedious process. Anyone who says it doesn't hurt to paint an old piece of furniture, because it can be taken off in the future - has obviously never had to strip paint off a piece of furniture!

Apparently turning an antique spool cabinet into a end table must have been a thing at some time in the past. I've seen several of them at estate auctions, all damaged beyond easy recognition. It is such a shame since spool cabinets are still fairly popular and retail-able from what I've seen.

Try the 80's, Joe. One of my sisters had a couple that she had purchased already refinished - and they looked great! And still did the last time I was at her house in 2006. She had the perfect age house and decor for them in Rhode Island. We don't see them much out here on the wet coast.
