Featured Just an idea for new threads...

I read on one of the threads that membership is declining, and I’m wondering if it would attract new members to have a separate ongoing thread within each forum where people who have knowledge of special antique or vintage items they own or owned could post photos and descriptions for the purpose of educating others (sort of a member showcase). I realize some members already do this, or post an item from their collection within someone else’s thread when they have a relevant example (which I always appreciate). But I feel like there must be more members on this site who have some really great things that others would like to see and learn about. Maybe this is a dumb idea since people can google just about anything they want to learn more about and find numerous examples...but often when I do this, I get frustrated when all I find is a photo, maybe a brief title, and then a dead end.

This would be different than looking through typical threads where people want to find out something about an item and you have to read through various and sometimes conflicting opinions and information. A member's showcased item would provide the relevant information upfront (although I suppose it still might generate new or conflicting information, which could be a good or bad thing).

Membership is not declining but increasing daily.

Good to hear that the people who said membership was declining were wrong.

    Which means some may return.;)
I will, although I need to pace myself much more than I did today.:banghead: (No fool like an old fool.:hilarious:)
But at least I will feel much more relaxed, and safer, with that member gone. It will help my recovery too.
    So thank you Mods.

I'll spread the word, who knows.....

    - What a nice idea! There is so much to learn and so many knowledgeable folks on this board that provide wonderful information, though sometimes down far in a message thread.

Just brainstorming, but maybe no new threads are needed, perhaps just a convention to prefix the post titles with something like "Member Showcase on:" (e.g. Early Rookwood) or some topic that others might have interest in?

I agree with Davey. Every time I look at the member count on the site, it has gone up. Right now it says 20,282. The highest it's ever been. However, there are many people who join just to find out about one item. But most of those do not ask to have their member ID deleted. Still, there are far more active users here than I've ever seen before. That's good. I also appreciate the ones who just ask one question. [I don't know who Davey was referring to, and don't want to know. :)]

The ongoing thread idea sounds nice, @Joan -- I don't feel that they would be maintained in the long run, though. I don't mean to dash cold water, but ... the only threads that come to mind that are informative and that have been maintained and have additions by multiple posters for quite a while are the cameo threads started by Bronwen. I'm sure there are others, but... for now I can't think of them.
There are also some excellent threads with information mostly by just one person, like the Tibetan jewelry thread by Any Jewelry, and the informative ones about types of lace by Northern Lights Lodge. Just my opinion, of course.

I appreciate the comments and ideas from others. Maybe my idea isn’t realistic. I recently read a new member's post on the Cameos thread who said she was in the process of going through every page in the thread and learning a lot about Cameos –- much easier and faster than searching, opening and closing a bunch of separate threads. So maybe most members are mainly interested in specific categories within forums and wouldn’t be interested in looking through a thread that included photo examples and information on the whole range of jewelry, or whatever. And maybe such a thread would trigger others to post photos of something similar that they have questions about instead of posting in a separate thread, which would defeat the purpose of a showcase thread.

Yes, I do look at the finds thread now and then, but I was trying to think of something that might draw in new members who don't necessarily have questions, but have nice gloatworthy things they would like to showcase from time to time.

Well I want to know. Who was the person making people feel unsafe? Were there threats of violence?

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

right now, there are. Total: 152 .. (members: 4, guests: 131, robots: 17) on the site.

I for one , find that the overwhelming majority of new members find us, while searching for something else, and discover that we may be able to help them.

It is just my opinion that there is no possible way to draw in new members who are interested in showing folks they do not know , their precious objects , & opening them up to scrutiny and that will then be lifted off the site by the Robots mentioned above....and end up on the web.....for all to see.

This is not farcebook.......and we are not aunt Sue....

in my honest non threatening opinion................ see.....:happy::happy::happy::playful::playful::playful::):):).;)

I really appreciate your opinion. I closed my fb account several years ago, but I thought the various fb collector groups were similar to this group since members sometimes refer others to them for additional help. [Edit: i should add that it's only a been a few times when I've seen members here refer others to a fb collector group, and I got the impression that it was one of the rare groups that actually had knowledgeable members.]

I didn't realize there were bots on this site, but I suppose that's how one of the photos I posted here ended up on Google images (I was really surprised when I stumbled across it). I think it took me back here when I clicked on it....isn't that a good thing? I get the impression that you have concerns about photos being lifted off this site and posted on the web for all to see and am wondering if I should I be concerned about posting photos here of things I own. Or, maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.
