Featured Pre-columbian? silver framed fabric box lid

This was bought part of a local auction win thread

got some new pics did, and thought to add it to a new thread for more eyes

looks to be the top off a old box (should be easy to turn into a wall hanging)

stamped peru 925

couple of members suggested the fabric could be pre-columbian

measures 5 inches by 4

any thoughts appreciated

 

It does look like a box lid. Perhaps it started life like this.

Thank you mate, the auction house merely stated peru 925 frame without mention of what was inside it

 

It's one of those gray area things; they may have been afraid if they broadcast what it was, they wouldn't have been able to sell it.

 

Hmmm, interesting evey, I know you touched on the subject before about where the fabrics might have come from

I'll have to look into that before trying to sell it

Are they an ebay no no, and were they all from that type of thing

And how would you tell ?

 

No idea, but I'm not sure I'd want to find out.

 

Charlie-If you're going to resell it-would it be worth way more as a box or as a wall piece ? Even though the original's rosewood,to recreate a box prob wouldn't be too costly,a very simple construction.

 

If it's rosewood that's another problem; in some places you can't sell rosewood unless it's an antique. The fabric may be, but the wood is 20th century.

Probably would sell better as a box, but I would never get round to sorting it out

 

Yep Evely,selling Tribal,NA & endangered woods could be problematic.If an artifact can't be sold,it could go to an heir,a museum or be repatriated-but even donating something could also be a bit of a legal thicket ?
Very complex international laws,and i have a sneaky feeling an international antiquities lawyer might be expensive.

 

You might (if the textiles legally salable) remove carefully from the rosewood backing,remount and frame it.Of course it might not survive removal & remount ?

 

PS-All the Chancay dolls I've handled have been pretty stable,of course this may have been glued-the box was made in the 1960's.
Some Dealers back in the 70' and 80's used to say 'these were made by the Nazca Lines tribe,you know the space ship people !'...not.

May indeed not be rosewood or glued down-the 2 most essentials value-wise to the piece are the stamped silver frame & of course the textile.

 

Hey Chuck - I picked up one of these at a thrift shop years ago. Just pulled it down off my bookshelf. Here's a couple pics to compare. It's about the same size as yours.

Probably Chimú culture from Peru's north coast, and it's upside down.
Chimú art features a lot of stylised felines, and you've got a cat standing on its head.

There are many pre-Columbian cultures that made textiles using mind-boggling weaving techniques, Chancay was just one of them, and not the most prominent.
The most amazing textiles were made by the Paracas culture. The Chimú made more cat imagery than the others.
