Featured Black Clay Whistle?

Hi All,
Would this be a black clay whistle from Peru? Souvenir tourist piece? No marks on the base, 6"H.
any information appreciated

He's playing an ocarina. Beyond that...dunno.

As for the one Komo found, they're playing something else!

Yes, modern souvenir version - but of a Chimu vessel rather than Moche. Moche usually terracotta color, while Chimu usually black. A different firing technique, but otherwise quite similar tradition.

I'd say it is a combination of Mochica and Chimú. The two cultures are Moche, but different time periods.
It has the Mochica (older Moche) shape in both the stirrup vessel and the realistic face, but it is black like Chimú (later Moche) ceramics.
He is playing a flute rather than an ocarina. Ocarinas are originally a Chinese invention, adapted by an Italian in the 19th century.

 

OT: there is some uncertainty about the origin of the ocarina; and there was likely parallel development; ocarinas were known in the Mayan and Aztec cultures, and in India, around 5,000 BCE; and a stone-age example has been found in Europe, dating to around 10,000 BCE. Giuseppe Donati is credited with inventing the modern ocarina in 1853, but it is generally thought he was influenced by the Latin American versions more than the Chinese.
