    Hi,
Can anyone help me with this piece? I did t want to file into it. XRF goes from 15+ kt to almost 19kt on certain spots. The acid sat for 20 minutes plus

    Rolled gold?? Maybe?

    what say ye?

I have a 19th c "doorknocker" style pin that also XRF tested for 15K for the main body and 21K for the three dangling ball accents. I assumed different parts were different karats. Is the test saying different for the main body versus the dangle or applied details?

Yes. The ball is the over 18k. The upper portion is the 15k plus. It’s also reading non-standard gold karat

Might be a trend then. Using different karats might have made certain pieces stand out when new. I would not think it filled.

I don’t know the reason why but i have had a few old items that test different on different parts.

Recently sold a nice cameo mount that was 18ct on the front and surround, but 15ct back panel. It was all one piece so not a possibly marriage of items. I suppose if its unmarked there is less chance of it being a consistent purity?

I think that’s a basic thing with older pieces.
