There's a plate I've been thinking about buying from a resale store down the street. This isn't it, but it has to be by the same maker because they are SO similar.
This one is a lot bigger, while the one I'm thinking about is about 10 to 12 inches in diameter. Do you think this seller knew what they were talking about? Do you think it is actually early 1900's or just a cheap tourist item?
Thanks for any and all comments! This is the link where I found the picture.

Are there any marks on the back of the plate?

It is a style of pottery known as Cochin, or Koji (in Japanese).

"Cochin ceramics are distinguished by brightly coloured muliti-layer glazes fired at relatively low temperature (about 900 degree). The word 'Cochin' is derived from the Japanese word 'koji', the name given by Japanese traders to an area in southern China-notably Fujian and Guangdong provinces-and Vietnam, where these ceramics originated some 300 years ago for use in Japan as incense holders and in tea ceremonies.

The art form entered Taiwan during the reign of the Tao Kuang Emperor(1821-1850) and were used to adorn temples with life-like legendary figures, mythical beasts, birds and animals. The production process relies on the ingenuity of the craftsman to select, filter, mould, shape, dry, and fire the clay with multi-level glazes, so combining the skills of construction, design, imagery and clay firing into one artifact. The unique brilliance of the colors, such as the amber and jadeite greens and the golden reds, have been appreciated increasingly with each passing generation.

Cochin Ceramics have always occupied a central part of Taiwan's traditional artistic culture, and have now evolved to become unique decorative artifacts of exquisite beauty believed to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits."

I can find references to a modern Taiwanese artist, Lin Kuang-i or Lin Guang Yi, as a master and preserver of the Cochin style, but none of the links to a Taiwanese government site seem to work.

looking at the base of the link you posted, i'm not sure its right for that early, and the colours are a bit off, so if it is indeed the same, i would think a reproduction.................but a fabulous looking one anyway, its gonna have good value no matter what i reckon

    Wow! I love you guys!
2manybooks , you had me at "believed to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits", with my luck lately, can't get enough of that!
I think the plate looked more like the one you posted than the picture I had found. Was that a new plate? I didn't see a date of manufacture.
charlie c, it started at $50. USD, but it has gone down to $30. The base looked just the same as the one you posted but not signed. I don't really know what earthen ware is, but it seemed like ceramic to me, so should I not get it? It did seem lighter than I expected when I picked it up, but I'm used to the restaurant ware my sister collects which is heavy. It just seemed so nicely done. It's a thrift store that thinks it's an antique store. They have it in a locked case, but it's been there for a few weeks.

I quoted the description of Cochin ware from the site linked at the bottom of the description.

The plate in my first post is by a modern Taiwanese artist. The plate in my second post, listed on a Korean selling site, is described as dating from the Qing dynasty (1644-1912).

Earthenware is a type of ceramic, characterized by a type of clay that is fired at a relatively low temperature. Earthenware pottery tends to be more porous. Clays that can be fired at higher temperatures without slumping in the kiln are denser, less porous, and more vitrified (glasslike). The typical firing range for different types of ceramic bodies is - earthenware 900-1200C, stoneware 1200-1350C, porcelain 1300-1450C.

I got it! Thank you all for your advice. It was still there, but maybe because it was in a locked case?
I've made quite a few mistakes, (many), when buying things I don't have experience with, but I'm good with just not overpaying. Plus, I've learned, finally, to only buy pieces I actually like.
Here it is, 10.75 inches, 27.30 cm in diameter. Not signed. It came with a box, which probably isn't good, but I'm hoping it has at least some age to it.

It is vintage! How vintage I dunno, but the box may be a clue. Not antique yet, I think (100 yrs old +).

It was made as giftware. Check if the closing thingies are bone or plastic.

Ok Charlie, here are a few outside, one in the shade and one in direct sun.
AJ, I'm not sure about the closing things. They're kind of smooth but look rough. Probably plastic.

No regrets. Now that I've been REALLY looking at it, I like it even more. Think I'll keep it around for a while. Looks a little wicked!
