I am obsessed with bohemian garnets(my birthstone is garnet ) and have been collecting garnet necklaces and earrings from time to time. I just purchased parure set on ebay, it was listed as garnet costume jewelry. I think the metal is definitely not gold, gilt or tombak like many victorian pieces are, is it usually considered as costume pieces?

The photo is too small to see the details of the necklace, usually jewelry that is not gold, silver or platinum is considered costume.Bohemian are a pyrope garnet which are found at many locations in the world.

They're often set in gilt silver, but sometimes in gilt brass. The Czechs were known to mix real stones and glass if they needed a certain size.

Gorgeous set, and welcome @Lunamana .

In the second half of the 19th century Bohemian garnets were also set in "garnet gold", a very low gold fineness of .250. It is also known by its Austro-Hungarian name "Viertelgold", literally quarter gold, because it is 250/1000.

And of course tombak was used, which you already mentioned.
