Introduction - Just joined

Hello everyone

I've just joined the forum. I have bought an old writing slope in poor condition, in the hope of being able to restore it. I've cleaned the brassware, and I've rubbed down the veneer with fine wire wool. It was sold as figured walnut - I hope that's true as I know walnut is very fine. I'll need to repair some damage to the surface and the corners, and it needs a new skiver. But when the repairs are done, it needs a finish to bring out the figure of the veneer. One person has urged me to give it a coat of polyurethane - I'm not sure about that. Has anyone got a better suggestion for a finish for the veneered surfaces?

Welcome! Post the slope in the furniture section and I bet someone will know what to do. All I know is polyurethane is a Bad no-no.

 

Thank you all for your welcome messages! I will indeed go to the furniture forum and post some pics. Glad to read your comment about polyurethane, Evelyb30, it confirms my own suspicion!

And no, I'm not from W Nevada, in fact I'm from S Bucks ... in UK. Our village is about an hour's drive from central London, we're in the Chilterns. In a few minutes I'll be taking our old lurcher dog out for his morning walk in the fields. Bye for now.
