Giant Antique Clamp or Plane? Furniture Making or?

Hi, and thank you for your time. This large tool measures approximately 22” in length and weighs in at a hefty 8 pounds. It is stamped “P. Baron” in several spots. I don’t know if that was the maker or the owner. The screw turns freely and narrows the opening. It’s obviously quite old and has ample worm holes. I sold tools for 25 years, but this old tool has me stumped! Thank you so much for your help!

I also tried reloading his photos here so we could see them without clicking, but they wouldn't cooperate.

not a plane..& not sure what the screw moves?

 

Thank you for your kind interest. The screw moves the inside shoe, shown in photo #2. That is as far as it closes, so I don't think it would hold any type of blade. The first google image search said it was a furniture clamp, but I can’t reproduce that result.

 

some form of clamp would seem reasonable..
