Found this 'Osolniks Originals' MCM walnut bowl. As you can see, there's some losses to the varnish. What to do?

Can I partially sand it, then spot-touch new varnish?

Sand all varnish off and re-varnish completely?

    Leave as-is?

    Thanks for any advice!

Here's some of the damage: it's wear along portions of the rim, as well as some nicks here and there.

    Ok thanks.

if it was mine, I would first try using old English scratch remover on it once or twice (the light colored one) and then after it dries a coat of furniture paste wax. You’d be surprised how nice it could look with just those two steps. Sanding down to the varnish, removes a lot of the patina coloring and character from it

Same here. If it were really ugly I'd remove the varnish, but it's just the edges. I'd try just the paste wax first if worse came to worst.

Here's the (re) finished job. Turned out great. Thanks for the suggestions-- it's exactly what I did.

@Potteryplease LOOK what I found on Saturday at the thrift for $8...

It is a whopping 17.5" across!

At the time I snatched out of the new bin because it was wood and so massive so I knew I'd want it. I saw it was signed and there was a niggling feeling in my brain but my policy when thrifting is to only exert extra in-store research on things I might sell. If it's something for me that I like (and I know basically what it is) then I just buy it. :D

I researched later that night and went wait a minute....this looks a lot like..... :hilarious::bag: So I guess you set me up on a date with the universe. I sat down to read a bit more of the Museum of Art and Design book that I've been working through and I thought "I bet they have one of his pieces..." Sure enough, they did. I couldn't believe it. :bookworm: It's so far the only piece I've found that is as big/bigger than this one (theirs is 18-19").

I have the dark Old English, and some Howards, but I want to do it right so we'll be picking up some light Old English and wax paste today. I'm excited to touch it up. :joyful:

@mirana Thats amazing! $8 is 50% less than my $12, so great find!! ;);)

That is a "it's a small world" moment for sure! Yours is beautiful. I'm really enamored with mine, so you might be too. I love it from the side, especially. It looks so fine and elegant. But then again, I have a thing for wood (and pottery!) bowls.

    Awesome story.

I was too busy to comment before your refinish but I love, loveee wood objects and there's something really special about a perfect turned bowl. They really display the rings, knots, and growth texture so beautifully that I don't even want to put things in them. I thought yours had such good character with the two-tone wood and satisfying grain pattern.

I just have to figure out where to put it. I have plenty of open tables but it's an art piece in it's own right. When I showed my husband at the thrift he said I couldn't keep it due to my "problem with bowls." :hilarious: An ongoing joke. His "problem" is books and other media.

I have mine on a table. Whenever I walk into the room my eyes are drawn to it. Kinda magnetic. And yours is even bigger!
