I have this item but I dont know whether its a base that something goes onto or if it has a base or something that it fits into i can't figure out what its is. Thanks.
It looks like a 19th century Chinese bronze lid. I regularly come across Chinese bronze or wooden lids on their own, without a container.
@Shaun360 - Hello & welcome to the forum!! I can't assist you with your item, but there will likely be someone who can help. A couple of things may help our members to help you. Where did you find this item? Can you give us an idea of what it is made from? Is it very lightweight or very heavy? Is it cold to the touch? What are the measurements of the piece? Photos can be very deceiving when it comes to judging size. A photo of the bottom may help someone. Always post your photos in the full image. Here is a post that is in the "Antiques" section that may be helpful when it comes to posting photos, etc. https://www.antiquers.com/threads/are-u-a-new-member-just-found-this-site-look-here-1st.84307/
I wonder what was under it originally. I can imagine a wood-turner getting hold of it and making a container to fit underneath. Walnut maybe.
where did post 10 go,,,,,,,,? the top of the op's item ...I was wondering if it looked like it slotted into a base...!
It's 9" in diametre, made of bronze i think and has a red colour to it maybe from oxidisation and its heavy for its size.
I think it seems like it does and this would make sense but then some people say it looks like a lid for something so im not 100% i can't even find out what the letters/inscription inside the circle mean.
Threads like this evolve, and hopefully reach the right ID. When someone says that it looks like something, it is part of the brainstorming we do, bouncing ideas off each other. I brought up the lid idea as an idea, but that doesn't mean it can't be the top of a censer.
the dragon does not look upside down in this photo.......... so the plant stand is now making more sense.... many is the time we are presented an item..... which is not complete !
I like the idea of a plant stand, I think i might just order a small dark wooden stand so the circle bit can fit in i've seen a few on e-bay after looking, so i'll have a small planter, i think that would be nice, but id still like to find out what the script says or means, so i'll keep looking for more info, if I find out before anyone here i'll let you know.
