In order to promote Merry Christmases and Happy Holidays around Casa Ghopper, I happily acquired a mahogany plant stand this past weekend, on Black Friday as a matter of fact. I attribute it to New York furniture maker R. J. Horner, about 1885. I don't have an issue with this attribution, because 1) Horner rarely signed anything, so a (confident) attribution is usually as good as it gets, 2) The robustness of the piece and quality of the carving point to Horner, and 3) its got 4 of Horner’s trademark 4-toed paw feet.

This piece is about 25 pounds (U.S.) of mahogany. In the last pic you'll see it supporting our bronze eagle, the source of which remains obscure. I can find only one stand attributed to Horner on the net at the moment, and it is very much simplified; I believe they're asking $1300 for it. I'm not even sure that it's Horner. Anyway, I think $2-$3K U.S. would be a realistic resale price for this.

Not that I'm going to, ha ha.

    Perfect addition to Chez Ghopper.
The carving reminds me of the pillars of the Baldaquin by Bernini in St Peter's Cathedral in Rome.

Quite right, @Any Jewelry . Such columns are sometimes known as “Solomonic.”

I think you are going to need a bigger house. Any favorite architects/architectural styles of historical homes?

One of my few clear memories of a visit there when I was 15 is the tour guide explaining that the twisted form of the columns was supposed to be like that of the columns of the Temple of Solomon.
