Bone, I think. I saw similar pieces being made in a small workshop in Ireland about 10 years back.

The design may have originally been Maori, but I think it is widespread now.

I carved a number of Maori type pendants before they made mammoth ivory illegal maori2.jpg in a number of states.

Very cool Holly, i usually dislike pendants full stop (apart from crosses)

but can see those types looking great worn higher up at a choker type height

A few years ago (~12) in Victoria, B.C., I purchased a very similar pendant in a retail B.C. shop...of local Jade, for my sweetie. She wears it regularly, an' loves it.
The design, however old it may be, is as simple as truth...an' timeless. It'll be as evocative in a millennium as it is today.

and there and at that time it was likely carved by Chinese shop workers...

Very sweet tactile object. Hope you find it. You could wear it through your nose perhaps

    on a serious note (ish)

Does targa nut have those dark spots and lines? I thought that was only bone.

I'm also seeing bone, without taking into account any black spots. Looks to me like a beautifully crafted piece of work. Not sure tagua nut would survive being sat on.
