    Hi all,
Can anyone shed some light in this please?
    Bought at auction as:
Netherlandish 17th century female personification of hope.
Looks like a falcon in the hand painted lady section. 35 x 26cm

Not convinced it's 17th C, I think more likely a 19th C "copy". I don't get why it's got hanging loops either. Lovelt thing though.

It could be that the center oval was a piece of architectural salvage, and the surround is essentially new, but no idea how old that center piece may be. 17th C glass would be hand made; a look at any ripple pattern might help to date it, but it's not knowledge I have.

The Goltzius engraving may be after a painting. (subsequent: apparently not in this case.)

(favorite Goltzius engraving: The Dragon Devouring the Companions of Cadmus)

It is a sun catcher meant to hang in a window. There were shops where you could go and but the glass and lead channels and get assembly assistance. This was in the 1980-90s.The lead does not look professional to me. I would not be surprised if the whole piece dated from that time frame.

If that center oval is as new as the rest, I would expect the image to be a decal. Can OP tell with certainty if it is hand painted or not? The image will be on one side of the glass. Can you tell what side that is and whether the painted side agrees in orientation with the engraved image? Might not make a difference.

That's a rather obscure image to find on a piece of modern stained glass.

I've a couple of old as dirt pieces of painted glass. As @moreotherstuff says, old glass isn't smooth, the rolling techniques to get that weren't possible. It's also too clear. I'd agree this is an older - 19th C - window pane in a newer surround. The image may be obscure, but it's attractive, hence the use of it.

Hi again and thank you all.
Looking at the painted oval closer the glass has hundreds of small bubbles combined with ridges/lines.

the painting is on one side, not so engraved but (in areas) the paint has been removed by etching, but not scratching the glass.

I'm sticking with 19th C, with the hanging loops added.

That's a beautiful piece of glass, and I would guess pre-industrial. Of course, glass can still be handmade today. The painting looks hand done as well. I can't imagine someone putting that much thought and effort into that center oval and then just tossing off the rest of the surround. I think the oval is salvage from an old piece, maybe even older than the 19th C, but you would have to have someone more knowledgeable than I to give a reliable assessment.

I would suspect that it's a piece of salvage from an old church. Would have been one of a series for an allegorical window(s) -- Faith, Hope and Charity perhaps. The artist did work with that imagery as evidenced by this work from the National Gallery.

It could be 17th century Dutch or Low Countries. By the 17th century they could achieve an amazing clarity in glass.
That is typical of antique glass for this kind of work, it is different from crown glass, which was used for smaller windows, like you see in houses on old paintings. At least here in the Netherlands, but I suspect it was the same elsewhere in Western and Central Europe. Crown glass has concentric circles in the centre.
It is painted (stained) on one side, before it is heated in a furnace. On the outside of the church etc is the unpainted side, but the inside, painted side is still subjected to all sorts of chemicals.

16th century church window, in Gouda, the Netherlands:
