Sorry in advance if you are reading this and my last post. On top of the 992 grams of coin & sterling flatware I snagged in the mail today, I scored another pile of treasure by quickness and timing. So here was my day in a nutshell:

-Dropped stuff off at the post office and started hunting at the local thrift stores.
-Managed to find a nice sterling dish at a local store for .50 cents (in the photos below)
-Came back home and opened up the mail to find a crazy good silver in my other post
-Decided to scan around on the internet to see if I could find any good listings

During that last event, within the first 15 minutes of looking, I came across a listing in my local area (by the way, my definition of local area is a bit WIDE). I saw a posting with the title "Assorted Sterling Silver". I asked about seeing a photo of the bottom of one of the items in the photo, and based on what they sent me I asked if they could meet up today.

So next I took a drive for an hour and 45 minutes to get to their location. Happily paid $20 and here's what I got. The weight on the bottom photo doesn't include the four candle holders obviously:

These people are just out there, waiting to be found. I find them all the time, I just have to look often and there they are. It feels like a dream every time it happens.

Is that $400 silver melt value?

    more or less........at 60 cents a gram...
but to see Terry tear apart candle sticks for the silver when I gotta believe the 2 pair that N8 got would sell for more ...whole.
That said.....what I've seen here ...the tens of thousands of dollars of silver and gold that members here have bought for pennies on the dollar , where so much of it seems destined for the kiln...........I just don't know anymore what stuff is worth..... not melted..

When I first started a few years ago, I tried to keep everything as a collection, and I mean EVERYTHING. I realized after awhile that wouldn’t be sustainable, largely because I find weighted items frequently. Personally, I also like to know the true weight of silver I’m finding; it’s not all about the money to me but it’s important for me to know if my decisions are at least “break even”.

    So here’s my scrap rules:

    1. If it’s weighted, I usually scrap it. I’ve tried selling weighted candle holders: they take forever to sell, they don’t make me much extra money, and I pay more to ship them because of the weight.

    2. If I get something that isn’t weighted, but damaged and common, into the scrap pile.

    3. Everything else I keep for awhile and eventually sell without scrapping. I consider myself lucky to get to enjoy the items I find for awhile, and then send them on to an owner who actually has a use for them.

I like the 2 bowls on the right, if undented, but I'd probably want to scrap the rest. Must you tear the silver plate off of the pieces to scrap them, MrNate?

Edited to say I like the leaf bowl too..

Scrapped the candle holders, hammered out a few dents and polished:

I don't have to use much silver polish, I just work slowly with a small amount of silver cream on an application sponge. Once I get the large areas polished, I take q-tips dipped in polish and work edges/corners and small blemishes. Then I go over the piece again with the application sponge. I wash the item, dry it and then I use a polish cloth for the final shine.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

They look beautiful -- And again, I've enjoyed one of your silver threads.

Wouldn’t you get more for your complete candleholders at Auction? I try and buy as you do for very little and find here in UK I get more than the thin silver tinfoil would be worth once stripped off. Maybe it’s different here. I look forward to your threads too btw. I have several silver cutlery bands that would be worth practically nothing as scrap but useful to adding to walking cane bases.
