Jumble sale find, 2 inches long and 1 and a quarter wide. At first I thought it was stone but now I think maybe it’s glass. Is that unusual? I don’t find a lot from there here in U.K. Thanks for any info.

Feels a bit warmer than stone, it’s cold at first but warms up quickly in my hand. I thought it might be a special glass ie Ancient Roman or something as it’s not very pretty glass, seems to have rough inclusions in it. Theres some rainbow petrol like colours in it which makes it a bit more attractive I think.

I think you are right that it's a shard of ancient glass. Made by whom I can't say, but perhaps found in that region. I don't understand the chemistry of it, but glass that spends an extended time in the ground will often develop that oil slick sheen.

Thanks, looking around it does seem that working with excavated Roman glass to make jewellery is made in Israel. I just had a wild guess and didn’t actually look online before I posted.

They sure do; I have a piece here somewhere. Mine is made from little tiny shards set in resin or some such. It wouldn't surprise me if that's what you found, in big chunk form. It tends to be pricey, so if the sellers were clueless you probably scored.

    I paid a measly 50p, which is $0.67 dollars. :)
