    Hi,
I thought the carnelian piece was a rat but now since I’ve taken a closeup, I’m not sure what it is. Capybara?!? lol. Anywho, it’s definitely Asian because of the clasp but the scarabs throw me off. Egyptian revival? Are the scarabs jasper or? What would the green balls be? The darker ones stay in the nephrite range and the lightest ones go to jadeite but not sure if that’s even close. I couldn’t find another example to compare it to.

    What are your thoughts?

My first impression was that the "rat" is an elephant. BWDIK?

I thought "some artisan thought that was a good idea". It was made in a Chinese workshop. No one else would have access to the cloisonne barrel clasp. The colors play nicely, but the scrab and critter do seem like odd bedfellows.

The mottled green and black stones look like maw-sit-sit stone, a very beautiful stone only found in Burma/Myanmar. It contains some jade and is often (intentionally?) sold as jade.

If I had to take a guess on this I'd say 1980s or later.

I saw an elephant too. Chinese aren’t above a rat by any means but I saw an elephant.
